Like other Apple products, you can choose custom names for your AirTags to find out what works in the Find My app. In this step-by-step tutorial, you will learn how to rename your AirTag by choosing a custom name and emoji for your Apple Tracker.
This is what you will learn in this lesson.

3) How to change your airtag emoji.

Why customize AirTag name and emoji?

Apple also announced the AirTag on its Sprint Load in April 2021.

To make it easier to distinguish between multiple airtags, Apple allows you to choose a custom name and even uses an expressive emoji instead of Apple's default airtag icon.
But why bother renaming your airtags first?

Because doing so will help you differentiate between more than one set of keys or any other personal belongings that you are tracking with air tags. According to the support document on Apple's website, you can add or change AirTag emoji without renaming it.

Air tag names are used to distinguish between multiple trackers in the following places.

Search my app on iOS, iPadOS and macOS.
Siri voice request ("Hey Siri, find my car keys")
      List of iCloud devices.
      Elsewhere in Apple's user interface.

Follow us as we show you how to rename your airtag.

How to rename your AirTag

To customize your airtag, make sure it's set up properly. Then, in the Find My App's Items tab, select the Air Tag and select the appropriate option to get the custom name and emoji.

Open the Find My app on your iPhone, iPad or Mac.
Select the "Items" tab in the Find My app.
Select the air tag whose name or emoji you want to change.
Select the option labeled "Rename item".
Select "Custom Name", then type the name of the custom air tag and select an emoji.
     Tap "Done" to save changes.

And now AirTag Find will show a new name with selected emojis in My App, except when you refer to AirTag requests and other places.

In addition to choosing a custom name for your airtag, you can also choose one of the default built-in names from the list. The system chooses an appropriate name based on the type of item associated with the tracker (which you selected during the initial setup), such as handbags, headphones, jacket, keys, luggage, umbrella, wallet, etc.

It is also possible to choose a different emoji for the airtag icon without changing the name.

How to change your AirTag emoji

You can choose an emoji for your airtag icon without renaming it. In the Find My App's Items tab, just select your air tag, then select the option to change the air tag emoji.

Open the Find My app on your iPhone, iPad or Mac.
Select the "Items" tab in the Find My app.
Select the air tag whose name or emoji you want to change.
Select the option labeled "Rename item".
Tap the circular emoji section in the text field.
Select an emoji from the emoji picker.
     Tap "Done" to save changes.

Your airtag will now use the emoji of your choice instead of the default icon.

And that's definitely a good thing, because the emoji you choose probably shows the same thing that is being tracked far better than Apple's default icon.
