How to allow untrusted shortcuts on iPhone

As we said before, you should be careful about shortcuts created by other people because you will never know if some of the iOS automation scripts you downloaded were created for malicious purposes. Are Admittedly, with iOS 13, Apple has stopped allowing shortcuts from friends, websites, and more unless you override the default settings. In this tutorial, you're going to learn how to allow incredible shortcuts on your iPhone and iPad that will allow you to add workflows from sources outside the Gallery section to the Shortcuts app.

Why are some shortcuts untrusted?

Incredible Shortcuts are shortcuts that you add to the Shortcuts app from sources outside the Gallery section on your iPhone or iPad. These often come not only from your friends who can send you cool shortcuts via email or messages but also from your favorite websites and much more.

Apple considers all shared shortcuts untrusted

If you try to download unreliable shortcuts from a specific website, you will see a warning that your security settings do not allow unreliable shortcuts. Of course, the hint could have been more helpful - for example, there is a fine button provided by Apple, which actually allows you to change the privacy settings of your shortcuts there and then.

Before you are allowed to import shared workflows into the Shortcuts app, you must first allow unreliable shortcuts in the settings and our step-by-step tutorial embedded next shows you how.

How to allow untrusted shortcuts

Follow these steps to permit the installation of untrusted shortcuts on an iPhone and iPad:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iOS device.
  2. Choose Shortcuts from the root list.
  3. Slide the Allow Untrusted Shortcuts button to the ON position.
  4. A confirmation dialog will appear. Tap Allow to continue.

You can now download and install shortcuts from sources outside the Gallery section of the Shortcuts app, such as from friends, websites, and other non-Apple sources.

Don't you see such an option? To display this you must first run a shortcut: set the shortcut app on your device, go to the Gallery tab, then first install the shortcut from there and run it. Doing so will allow unreliable shortcuts to appear in the Settings app.

And quite frankly, that's all!

Untrusted shortcuts and your security

As mentioned earlier, Apple does not review shortcuts. It considers all shared shortcuts included outside of the Gallery section to be unreliable. After changing your shortcuts security settings as described above, you will be able to install shared shortcuts without getting in the way of security warnings.

 As Apple itself cautions:

Shortcuts that are downloaded from the web or shared with you by others may not have been reviewed by Apple and Apple has no control over the content or functionality of these shortcuts.

In other words, you are strongly advised to review or share with you any shortcuts downloaded from the web to verify that they work as you expect. Are

You control which shortcuts access your personal information, such as your location, contacts, health data, payment information or the contents of your documents. You can review and control the data whose shortcuts are accessed in its Details section.

Make sure to synchronize any shortcuts you make to your devices without interruption.

enable the handy synchronization feature by venturing to Settings → Apple ID → iCloud → Shortcuts or, alternatively, go to Settings → Shortcuts → iCloud Sync.

Shortcuts changes in iOS 13

During WWDC 2019, Apple made some notable changes to the Shortcuts app. In addition to preloading on iOS devices (previously it was a separate download), the app has become more interactive and now includes suggestions for things you do most of the time.
